Alphonse Elric has spent most of his life following in the footsteps of the one person who has been there his entire life; his older brother, Edward. Ever since he can remember, he has been with Edward, imitating him in everything he did. They stumbled upon their first magic books at a young age, and although they could never manage more than the most simplest of spells, right up to when they left for school, they were hooked for life.

When it comes to magic, Al was interested in potions like his brother, but his true love was transfiguration. The idea that one thing could be changed into another was completely fascinating to his three-year-old mind, though Edward’s slightly older one seemed to like potions a little more.

Alphonse has spent most of his life in an orphanage. His father left when he was quite young, leaving the boy with only fuzzy memories of the man. Most of what he knows is what Ed told him, and yet he doesn’t believe that he could be as bad as Edward makes him sound. He was their father after all. His mother, he remembers a little better. He remembers her softness, her kindness, and her scent, amongst other things. Unbeknownst even to Edward, he has a small bottle of her perfume that he collected from her room soon after she died. It’s his most prized possession because it smells like her, even years later.

Al was scared of being away from Ed when the older boy’s letter came for Hogwarts. They had never been apart from each other before! However, he knew that it was for the best. When Edward showed his doubts, it was Alphonse that insisted and all but literally pushed Edward out the door. Still, the two kept in close contact with letters, owls, and visits home during every possible holiday until it was Alphonse’s turn to receive his.

In his years at the school, he’s made some good friends on his own, and has a few more which he shares with his brother. The ever-present yin to Edwards yang, and ever polite, he is the one to generally deal with the aftereffects of his brother’s battles, cooling down the other sibling and apologizing to the “enemies” on his behalf.
